Peyton Manning considers the off-season, particularly time on the field, important to the Colts’ success in recent seasons.
For that reason, Manning is particularly pleased these days.

Not because the Colts’ summer-school sessions end Thursday, but because – as was the case the past several seasons – the Colts’ quarterback considered the past four weeks of full-squad, on-field practices particularly positive.
“It’s been productive – it really has,” Manning said Wednesday, a day before the team’s final 2005 summer-school session at the Union Federal Football Center.
“I say that every year, but I feel like we just get really good
work out of this: the veterans, keeping their skill sharp; the young players, getting in their time with the number one group. A receiver made a great play today and I heard a player go, ‘Good job. Go ahead and make this team.’
“That’s why it’s important for me to be out there giving my best effort. You want to help this kid make the team, and you also want to help yourself be a better player and have a good 2005 season.”
The Colts will break summer school today, with the coaching staff on vacation until late July. The players’ off-season workout program will continue for several weeks.
Training camp is scheduled to begin July 27 at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind.
“It’s been attitude – it’s been positive enthusiasm,” said Manning, the National Football League’s Most Valuable Player the past two seasons. “There have been guys bouncing around here. There have been a lot of practices, but guys are hustling to and from drills and making plays.
“We’ve got no pads on, but they’re diving for passes and diving to break up passes. A lot of that is because of the young guys, but there is certainly enthusiasm there. You hope that enthusiasm kind of makes up for that and that they can get experience on the run.”
The Colts’ preseason opener is the Tokyo Bowl in Japan August 6.
“We’ll be on that plane going to Tokyo before you know it,” Manning said.
Manning said although the summer school sessions are held without pads, he can see a significant improvement in the Colts’ defense.
“The holes are tighter and coverage is tighter,” Manning said. “You see a (Colts first-round draft selection and cornerback) Marlin Jackson breaking on a ball today, and running it back the other way.
“I didn’t throw it,” he added, laughing, “but that’s what you see. You see those plays being made. Even though you’re competing and you want to do well as an offense, that gets you excited, that the defense is making plays.
“That’s the idea right now, to get both sides of the ball better so we can be the best team we can be.”
Also, Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy said Joseph Jefferson to safety from cornerback could be a long-term move. Jefferson began working at safety this week.
The decision to move Jefferson was made because safety Mike Doss will miss at least the first regular-season game because of a pending suspension.
“It may be long-term, but it’s certainly short-term,” Dungy said. “We’re preparing for what we eventually do with Mike. Joseph is a very physical guy and he has tremendous ball skills. He has a lot of the things you look for in a safety.
“We talked about a lot of different candidates, but we thought for everyone involved and the benefit of everyone and the fact that it may be long term it may be a real good move for him. We’re just looking at trying to get the best players on the field.”
