Shelton, who signed a free-agent contract with the team last week after spending his first six NFL seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, is the second member of his family to play here professionally. His father, Lonnie Shelton, was a tough, in-the-paint enforcer at forward in the NBA for 10 years, including three seasons in the mid-1980s (1983-84 through 1985-86) for the Cavaliers. In Shelton's final year in Cleveland, fans might recall, the Cavaliers recovered from a horrible start to make it into the playoffs.
"It's kind of a neat situation to be in, playing in the same city that your dad played in at one point," Shelton said. "It has special meaning.
"My dad was excited for me to come here. The first thing he said to me was that it's cold here. He's from California, but I went to high school and college in Detroit so I'm used to it.
"He had an enjoyable experience here. He still has friends on this area that I've actually been in contact with. So I've got a second family out this way."
Shelton did not live here at the time his father was a Cavalier. He stayed with his mother in Seattle, but after his dad was no longer with the Cavs, he lived in Broadview Heights for a year with his mother, who had remarried a man from the Cleveland area.
So no matter what happens in his life, those Cleveland connections just seem to keep popping up. Kind of ironic?
"Yeah, you could call it that, but really, it was just coincidence," Shelton said.

Is this a coincidence again? Who knows? But the fact of the matter is that he's now with the team he rooted for as a kid at one time.
"I liked the Browns when I was living here before," Shelton said. "They were the local team, and I was into football at an early age. But it's just the tradition that the Browns have, more than anything, that makes being here special."
Fortunately for Shelton, he won't be following in his father's exact footsteps here. He's not a basketball player - anymore, at least.
That situation was reserved for his brother, Marlon, who was a basketball player at the University of Washington, where their father performed collegiately.
"That was my dad's old stomping grounds, so my brother had those shoes to fill," Shelton said. "That's not me, so I don't feel pressure like that."
But he almost felt that pressure. He excelled in basketball at Rochester (Mich.) High School, averaging 13 points and just over 12 rebounds per game as a senior. He even cut his senior football season short - he played just four games - so he could concentrate on basketball.
But in the end, Shelton decided his future was in football, not basketball. The football coaches at Eastern Michigan agreed, as they offered him a scholarship. He developed into a second-team All-America pick by the time he was a senior and attracted plenty of NFL attention. He was eventually taken in the first round, as the No. 21 overall pick, by the Cardinals.
Irony also played a part in that draft. Seattle is where Shelton's father really made a name for himself in the NBA while playing for the SuperSonics. The Seattle Seahawks, who had the No. 22 pick in that first round, were reportedly poised to take him if Arizona had selected someone else in the slot right ahead of them.
As much of a big deal as it is for Shelton to be playing in Cleveland because of his father's connections to the Cavaliers, it would have been an even bigger one if he had landed in Seattle. Shelton's father was an NBA all-star with the SuperSonics and was a key player on their teams that made it to back-to-back league championship series against the then Washington Bullets, winning it all in 1978.
Shelton would like to win a world title here, too, but he may need to stay a little longer for that to happen. He signed only a one-year contract with the rebuilding Browns. He said it's more or less a trial run for both parties.
"This late in free agency, there weren't that many opportunities out there," Shelton said. "By this time, most teams don't have holes in their offensive line that they're trying to fill, especially at left tackle.
"Coming to the Browns was a prime opportunity for me. A one-year deal makes sense. If it works out for the Browns, then we can go from there. And if it doesn't work out, then we can all make decisions at the end of this thing.
"But I like it here. I'm working hard. I want to be a part of things here."
Just as his dad was two decades ago
